Unique vs fixed pairs

In doubles you can rotate partners every round (Unique) or keep the same pairs all event (Fixed). Here's how each one works, and when to use it.

Unique pairing (rotating partners)

Each round the app looks for the pairings with the fewest repeats: partners you've already had and opponents you've already played. It tries several options and keeps the best one.

It keeps repeats to a minimum but can't always avoid them. With 8 players on 2 doubles courts, a perfect rotation runs out after a few rounds, and then the app picks the option with the fewest repeats. The pairing history resets once every combination has been used, or when the roster changes.

Fixed pairs

Set the pairs with Set Fixed Pairs on the setup screen. They stay together for the whole event and appear as one row in the table (for example "Alex & Sam"). If the roster changes mid-event, pairs are re-made automatically.

Which should I choose?

  • Social nights and mixed groups: Unique. Everyone plays with and against lots of people.
  • Club championships, couples or regular partnerships: Fixed.
  • Americano-style padel or pickleball: Unique. Note that the table ranks by wins and then point difference, not total points.

Where it applies

Pairing Mode appears for Doubles Round Robin and Single Elimination. Other formats make teams their own way. For example, Double Elimination pairs players with similar ratings, and Swiss re-teams each group of four from the standings.

FAQ

Is Unique pairing the same as an Americano?

Partners rotate like an Americano, but results are win or loss (plus point difference), not total points. There's no separate Americano or Mexicano mode.

Can I name the teams?

Not at the moment. Fixed pairs are shown with both names, for example "Alex & Sam".
