Tournament formats explained
Not sure which format to run? Here's how each one works, how many matches it takes, and when to use it.
| Format | Matches | Best for | In app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round Robin | Set the Round Robin Target to Once and every pair meets once. For singles that's n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches, so 8 players play 28. You can also choose Twice, 3× or Continuous. | Club nights and social sessions | Free |
| Single Elimination | n − 1 matches for n players or teams, plus one more if you keep the 3rd-place playoff. | Short events with many entrants | Free |
| Double Elimination | Everyone plays until their second loss, so roughly twice as many matches as a knockout, plus a decider if the grand final is reset. | Competitive club championships | Pro |
| Swiss | You choose the number of rounds. The default is log₂ of the player count, rounded up, with a minimum of 2 (3 rounds for 8 players, 5 for 32). | Bigger groups where a round robin would take too long | Pro |
| Group Stage | A round robin inside each group, then a knockout for the qualifiers. | Club championships and finals days | Pro |
| Ladder | Neighbours on the ladder play each round, for 1–10 rounds that you set at setup. | King-of-the-court and up-and-down-the-river nights | Pro |
