How many Swiss rounds?

A Swiss tournament gives a fair ranking without everyone playing everyone. The question is how many rounds you need.

The default

The app suggests log₂ of the number of players, rounded up, with a minimum of 2. You can change it on the setup screen.

9–164
17–325

How each round is paired

  • Players are paired by the current standings with someone they haven't played yet.
  • If everyone has already met, the app allows a rematch rather than leave someone out.
  • With an odd number, the player who has had the fewest byes gets the bye, and it counts as a win.
  • In doubles, each group of four is re-teamed from the standings to vary partners and opponents.
  • Courts are ordered by strength, so the top matches are on Court 1.

Points and ranking

A win is worth 1 and a draw ½ (a draw happens when you track scores and they're level). The table ranks by points, then point difference. Players who are still level share a rank. There are no Buchholz or Sonneborn-Berger tie-breaks.

FAQ

Can I add more rounds for a clearer winner?

Yes. More rounds give a more accurate result. Set the number on the setup screen before you start.
