How an Americano works
Players don't come as fixed pairs. Each round everyone gets a new partner and new opponents. In a classic Americano each match is played to a set number of points, and every point you win counts towards your own total. The player with the most points at the end wins.
A popular size is 8 players on 2 courts: all 8 play every round and nobody sits out.
Setting it up for 8 players
- Agree how long each match lasts: a number of points or a time limit.
- Split the 8 players across 2 courts for round 1.
- After each round, rotate so everyone has a new partner and new opponents.
- Keep going until everyone has partnered everyone, or until your time is up.
Running an Americano-style night in Tournament Generator
Choose Round Robin, Doubles and Padel, and set Pairing Mode to Unique. Partners and opponents rotate every round, with repeats kept to a minimum.
One important difference: the app doesn't add up Americano points. The table ranks players by wins, then point difference when you record scores. There's no separate Americano or Mexicano mode.
For a 'winners up, losers down' night, try the Ladder format instead.
What you need
8 players on 2 courts needs Pro, which allows up to 10 courts and unlimited players. Free covers 8 players on 1 court, so 4 play and 4 rest each round. Pro has a 7-day free trial. A new user's first tournament also allows more than one court.
FAQ
What's the difference between an Americano and a Mexicano?
In an Americano the partner rotation is planned in advance. In a Mexicano, each round's teams are made from the current standings. Tournament Generator does Americano-style rotation (Unique pairing) but has no Mexicano mode.
Can I run an Americano with 12 or 16 players?
Yes, on 3 or 4 courts. If the number isn't a multiple of four, the extra players sit out each round in rotation.
